Ingredients
4 ½ cups peeled, cored and sliced apples
2 tsp lemon juice
2 tbsp water
½ cup Tāwari or Pua-ā-Tāne Wild Forest Honey
1 tsp ground cinnamon
¾ cup brown sugar
1cup flour
1⁄2 cup rolled oats
4 tbsp butter
Directions
Preheat oven to 175 degrees °C. Lightly grease a medium casserole dish.
Evenly spread the apple slices in the prepared dish. In a small bowl, mix the lemon juice and water, and pour over the apples. Drizzle apples with Tāwari or Pua-ā-Tāne Honey, and sprinkle with cinnamon.
In a bowl, mix the brown sugar, flour, oats, and butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over the apples.
Bake 25 minutes in the preheated oven, until apples are tender and topping is lightly browned.
Serve with cream, ice cream or custard
Notes
Include the lemon juice if you have it as it helps prevent the apples darkening as they cook. Lemon juice also adds flavour with the honey and cinnamon – delicious!
If you prefer, replace the rolled oats with the same amount of flour. We love the crunchy texture and nutritive value of rolled oats for this recipe but you may prefer a straight flour crumble for this dessert.
